In my work ideas precede design, although once a design has begun with an idea there is a constant back and forth between invention and evaluation. Often times I use words and their meanings as generators, tracing their etymological origins back to a resonant past. At other times the quantitative performance of an assembly may generate ideas about making.

Since the early 1980s I have been designing things (see Making) in a wide range of media—from photography, drawings, paintings, and etchings via sculpting in clay to full scale construction and renovations—based on ideas that were not always clearly defined but allowed the work to emerge in a constant dialogue between intuition and inquiry.
